A stress echocardiogram (stress echo) is an imaging test that uses ultrasound to determine how well your heart works under stress. This test is used to determine whether or not you have coronary artery disease. An echocardiogram is performed at rest, then during low, moderate, and high levels of exercise on a supine bicycle or with Dobutamine, a drug that simulates exercise. A sonographer or technologist will explain the procedure to you, take a brief medical history, and answer any questions you may have. Before, during, and after the test, your blood pressure, heart rate, and electrocardiogram (ECG) will be monitored. You will be asked to remove all upper-body clothing, change into a gown with a front opening, and lie down on an examination table. To monitor and record ECG signals, adhesive electrodes will be applied to your chest. The areas on your chest will be cleaned with alcohol and, if necessary, shaved. To ensure an interference-free and continuous ECG recording, a mild abrasion may also be used.
